A young nun named Maria (Julie Andrews) has a difficult time adjusting to convent life. She is restless and wants to break free of the rules and routines. She is urged to take up a temporary position as a governess by her mother superior.
The Story
Maria takes the job and finds herself with seven children, each of whom has a unique personality that is difficult to control. The youngest, Liesl (Charmian Carr), is in love with a messenger boy Rolfe (Daniel Truhitte). The other five children are all very well behaved, but Maria soon discovers that the Captain von Trapp’s (Christopher Plummer) strict military style of child-rearing has left them resentful and depressed.
Love With the Captain
After a period of time, Maria manages to gain the trust of each of the children. She helps Liesl sneak back into her house after she meets with Rolfe, and she starts to teach the children about music, singing, and other childhood pleasures. The children soon begin to feel better, and Maria begins to fall in love with the Captain. Unfortunately, the captain is engaged to a Baroness and must leave Salzburg for Vienna to be with her. She also has to worry about the political instability in Austria, which is annexed by Nazi Germany.

In the meantime, she continues to entertain the children with singing and dancing. She makes them play with clothes from drapes that need to be changed, takes them on boat rides in the mountains, and teaches them how to sing. Once she gets the children to sing for their new friend, Baroness Elsa Schraeder and her friend Max Detweiler, the captain’s attitude changes. Wins the Heart
Maria soon starts to win the hearts of all of the children, but it’s not long before her feelings for the captain become apparent. Eventually, she and the captain get married. Meanwhile, the children continue to impress their new friends with their performances at local concerts. Their talent attracts the attention of the Baroness and Max, who want them to be a part of their local singing group.
Despite her fears, Maria finally comes to realize that love is God’s plan. She learns to be patient and to be kind, and she regains the trust of the children, who begin to live happily again with Maria by their side.
Conclusion
The film has been adapted from the original stage musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, and it is considered one of the greatest films of all time. Robert Wise directed the film, and Ted McCord’s cinematography captures the spectacular scenery of the Austrian Alps with beautiful simplicity. The story of the Von Trapp family reflects some of the horrors of World War II and the rise of Nazi Austria, yet it is ultimately a joyful and upbeat tale of hope.
